Here is the short answer on AEO vs SEO vs GEO: SEO gets you into the list of links, AEO gets you named in the answer, and GEO is a newer word that mostly means the same thing as AEO. Three labels. Two real jobs.

If you run a plumbing company in Tampa or a dental practice in Miami, you do not need to pick a side. You need to know which work produces which result, and what to do first.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO, defined in one line each

SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Getting your pages to rank in a list of results. Google, Bing, the map pack. The customer sees ten options and picks one.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization). Getting your business named inside a written answer. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overview, Gemini. The customer sees one or two options, not ten.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). The same work as AEO, under a different label. The term came out of academic and agency circles in 2023 and 2024. Some people use GEO to mean the whole category of getting cited by generative tools; some use AEO. If a vendor tells you GEO is a separate service you need to buy on top of AEO, ask them to name one task that appears in one and not the other.

One more thing worth clearing up. GEO also gets used as shorthand for geographic or local targeting, which is a completely different meaning. When somebody says GEO, ask which one they mean before you agree to pay for it.

The confusion is not your fault

Three acronyms for two jobs is a marketing problem, not a technical one. Agencies invent labels because a new label sells a new retainer. The underlying work has not fragmented anywhere near as fast as the vocabulary has.

Where the three actually differ

The difference that matters is not the acronym. It is the shape of the result the customer sees.

A list versus a recommendation. With SEO you are competing for a position among ten. With AEO you are competing to be the one business the tool names. Second place in a list still gets clicks. Second place in an AI answer often gets nothing, because the answer never mentions you.

Clicks versus citations. SEO success is measured in traffic. AEO success is measured in mentions, and mentions are harder to count. Your analytics will not show a clean line for it. What you will notice is callers who say a specific thing, like "ChatGPT said you handle same-day water heater replacement."

Pages versus sources. Google ranks your page. An AI assistant reads your page, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and a few directories, then writes a sentence it can defend. If those sources disagree with each other, the tool picks a competitor whose sources agree.

What the three have in common

Most of the work overlaps. That is the part vendors do not lead with.

A clear page that says what you do, where, and for whom helps in all three. Correct and matching business details across the web help in all three. Real reviews that name the specific job help in all three. Fast pages that load on a phone help in all three.

We would put the overlap somewhere around three quarters of the work, though that is an estimate from what we see on Florida service business sites, not a measured figure. The point stands either way: the foundation is shared. You are not running three programs.

Where they stop overlapping

Two things matter for AI answers more than they ever did for rankings.

Summarizability. An AI tool has to compress your business into one sentence. "Premium solutions for discerning homeowners" compresses into nothing. "Licensed HVAC repair in Orlando, same-day service, 24 years in business" compresses cleanly. Vague copy used to be merely weak. It is now disqualifying.

Cross-source agreement. Ranking tolerated messy citations. AI answers do not. If your website says Smith Plumbing and your Yelp says Smith Plumbing Co, a tool checking two sources sees two businesses and trusts neither.

We wrote about the mechanics of this in more detail in how local businesses show up in AI search, and the fuller playbook lives in answer engine optimization for local businesses.

The order to fix things in

You do not need to choose between AEO vs SEO vs GEO. You need a sequence. This one works for local service businesses regardless of trade.

  1. Fix the first 200 words of your homepage. Service, city, and one trust signal. If a stranger cannot say what you do after one read, neither can a machine.
  2. Make your business details match everywhere. Name, address, phone, hours, service area. One version. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Nextdoor, your industry directories.
  3. Fill out your Google Business Profile properly. Correct primary category, every relevant secondary category, real photos, current hours, replies to recent reviews.
  4. Change how you ask for reviews. Ask the customer to mention the job and the city. "Great service" cannot be quoted. "Replaced our AC compressor in Winter Park on a Sunday" can.
  5. Write pages that answer real questions. Not "our services." The actual question a customer types at 9pm with water on the floor.
  6. Then worry about the technical layer. Schema markup, page speed, internal links. Useful, and useless if steps one through five are broken.

Notice that nothing in that list is exclusive to one acronym. Steps one through four move all three at once, which is the real reason the AEO vs SEO vs GEO debate is mostly noise for an operator.

What this looks like by trade

Plumbers and HVAC

Emergency questions dominate. Response time and service area precision are the two things an AI answer needs to name you, and both belong on your homepage in plain numbers. A page that says "serving Hillsborough and Pinellas, most calls on site within two hours" gives a tool something to quote. See how this plays out for Tampa plumbers.

Dentists and medical practices

Trust questions dominate. Whether you accept new patients, which insurance you take, which specific services you offer, who the providers are by name. Missing any of those means the tool cannot answer the question the patient asked, so it moves on. Same pattern for Miami dentists.

Lawyers

Specificity wins outright. Practice area, county, and the kind of matter. "Full-service firm" gives an answer engine nothing to work with, because every firm says it.

Med spas and salons

Named providers and real photos of real work. An anonymous corporate page loses to a smaller business with a face, a phone number, and reviews that name the treatment.

What to ignore

Skip anything sold as a GEO-only tactic with no explanation of the mechanism. Skip keyword density. Skip thin blog posts written to hit a word count. Skip any vendor who promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT answers, because nobody controls what those tools output and anyone claiming otherwise is guessing or worse.

Also skip the idea that SEO is finished. It is not. It is the floor. A page an AI tool cites is almost always a page that ranks well too, because the same qualities produce both.

The one sentence to keep

SEO is about being findable. AEO and GEO are about being describable. The work that makes your business easy to describe accurately is the same work that has always made it easy to find, held to a higher standard.
